Old Vine status is characterized by a vine greater than fifty years old. This Zinfandel from 67-year-old vines has some distinct advantages—it’s more textured and concentrated. Older vines give off fewer grapes, meaning the fruit that survives is fuller in flavor. The lower yield results in more sugar, tannin, acidity, and a fuller flavor profile in the wine. These older vines also have thicker root systems, so they can get nutrients and water from deep in the soil to make the wine fuller and show minerals or earthy elements from the vineyard if they're perfect. Mature vines are also less susceptible to environmental damage, which allows them to be higher quality vintage to vintage. Zinfandel from 67-year-old vines typically offers big, complex flavors and excellent harmony and structure, making it exciting and ageable.
